Introductory Letter from Steven M. Rothstein

August 30, 2016

Dear Friends and Supporters of the JFK Library and Foundation:

I could not be more excited.

This appointment as the next Executive Director of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation is truly humbling. I have deep appreciation to the Library Foundation’s Board and leadership for their selection and trust.

The John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum is dedicated to the memory of our nation's thirty-fifth president and to all those who, through the art of politics, seek a new and better world. Through the inspiration of President Kennedy and members of his family, I have built my career around assisting individuals that have been in the shadows of society.

  • My professional opportunities over several decades have supported this quest. I have learned from so many people. My experiences include:
  • Working with individuals with different abilities including those with developmental disabilities, visual impairment and other challenges.
  • Working with students in urban education.
  • Supporting individuals and enterprises to make a positive environmental impact.
  • Helping those who cannot afford their energy bills.

Earlier in my career, I had opportunities to work with the Kennedy family. This work included supporting Senator Edward M. Kennedy’s senatorial and presidential campaigns and Joe Kennedy II’s 1986 congressional campaign. I was also one of the founding team of Citizens Energy Corporation, which Joe Kennedy and the current team continue to make important social, economic and environmental impact.

I am thrilled to join our amazing Board, team and supporters at the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation and look forward to building upon the successful collaboration between the Foundation and Library to make President Kennedy’s legacy accessible and meaningful to new generations. If you have not been to the Library and Museum (or you have not been for a while), please come by and let me know if you are here; it would be a special pleasure to personally welcome you if I am available. If you cannot visit in the near future, I encourage you to engage with the millions of archival documents available online that offer a fascinating glimpse into the life and times of John F. Kennedy. And if you’d like further information about the Library’s public programs and initiatives, please sign up for our newsletter.

In addition to numerous executive and legislative accomplishments, President Kennedy and his family brought hope, inspiration, optimism and a commitment to public service and civic engagement. Please join with me and others to reinvigorate this effort. Despite the many challenges faced in our country and abroad, our future will be brighter if our children and grandchildren have the opportunity to reach the same level of engagement.

I look forward to hearing your ideas and suggestions for how the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation can be an important building block in our bright future together. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Steven M. Rothstein
