Folder Description
This folder contains material pertaining to the Committee on Financial Institutions, which was formally established in March 1962 to analyze changes in government policy toward private financial institutions that could benefit the economy. Walter W. Heller represented the Council of Economic Advisers (CEA) on the committee, and was also the committee's chairman (with James Tobin and then Gardner Ackley acting as chairman pro tem). Although the original folder title relates to a specific meeting that was held at 5:00 p.m. on 11 March 1963 at the Treasury building, the folder also contains more general information about the committee's work. Types of material include correspondence, memoranda, and news clippings. There is a final copy of the committee's report, which was submitted to the White House on 10 April 1963. The file also includes a speech by Neil G. Greensides titled "Federal Deposit Insurance and Current Banking Issues," and a CEA staff memo on possible 1963 legislative proposals relating to financial institutions.
