Rose Garden in the Spring

April 18, 1963

About the Puzzle

The Rose Garden underwent a massive transformation during the Kennedy administration, as part of President Kennedy’s wish to have a welcoming and elegant space outside of the Oval Office that could be used on special occasions at the White House. He selected Mrs. Kennedy’s friend, Bunny Mellon, who did not having any formal landscape training. Nevertheless, she set about turning the Rose Garden into the space the Kennedys envisioned.⁣

The garden was unveiled on April 24, 1962, and soon thereafter served as a backdrop for innumerable ceremonial events at the White House.⁣ See more photos of the Rose Garden during the Kennedy administration.
